In 2009, children in Mozambique took part in some research'Research' means finding out about something about corporal punishment. Over 2600 children aged 6-18 did a survey, and 168 children drew pictures and talked about the last time they were punished at home and at school. The research found that:
- One child in three had been hit with a hand at home in the past two weeks. 6-8 year olds were more likely to have been hit than older children. Poorer children were more likely to have been hit than richer children. 37% of children had been beaten with an object at home in the past two weeks.
- Girls and boys were both hit at home, but sometimes the reasons why they were hit were different. Girls aged 9-12 were often beaten because they did not do housework correctly, while boys aged 9-12 were often beaten because they went out or got home late.
- Most (85%) of the children thought it was wrong for them to be hit with a hand at home, and most of the children also thought it was wrong to punish children by embarrassing or shouting at them. About one child in three had been hit with a hand at school in the past two weeks, and four children in ten had been hit with an object at school in the past two weeks. About four in ten had also been punished in an embarrassing way at school in the past two weeks. Most children thought it was wrong for them to hit or embarrassed at school.
I was beaten at home because I made a mistake with a stick because I went out to play without washing the dishes and pots. (Girl, aged 9-12.)
I was beaten with a stick because I left home without telling anyone. I was shouted at and beaten. (Boy, aged 9-12.)
