RECOMMENDATIONS/OBSERVATIONS ON CORPORAL PUNISHMENT IN THE AFRICAN COMMITTEE OF EXPERTS ON THE RIGHTS AND WELFARE OF THE CHILD'S CONCLUDING OBSERVATIONS TO STATES EXAMINED IN THE 26TH SESSION

“The Committee welcomes the enactment of the 2008 Law on Sexual Violence and Female Gentile Mutilation. However, it is noted that violence and abuse against children is predominant within the family. Therefore, the Committee recommends the State Party to ban corporeal punishment in all settings. Moreover, the Committee recommends the State Party to put in place a child friendly and accessible reporting and rehabilitation mechanism for child victims.”

“The Committee commends that the Education Act proscribes corporal punishment in schools. The Committee further encourages the State Party to legislatively ban corporal punishment in all settings including home. Additionally, the State Party should sensitize children, parents and teachers on positive disciplining mechanisms that do not involve physical or verbal punishments.”
